Section-I

 

1. CHEMICALS FROM METHANE, ETHANE , ETHYLENE & ACETYLENE:

   Development of Pertochemical industries – Status in India – Feed stocks for  petrochemicals – Purification of gases – Separation of gases into individual constituents by separation techniques- Manufacture of petrochemicals – Chemicals from methane – oxidation of methane – Production of Methanol, Formaldehyde, Chloromethane, Methyl amines – Chemicals from Ethane – Ethylene – Acetylene – Vinyl chloride – Ethylene oxide – Vinyl acetate – Acetaldehyde from acetylene – Production of Isoprene – Ethanolamine – Calcium carbide.

Environmental concerns & innovative methods to reduce energy consumption, for recovery & reuse of valuable materials like catalysts, solvents, byproducts of coking, gaseous products in the above.

Chemicals from C3 & C4 & higher hydrocarbons – Dehydrogenation of propane & higher paraffins – Chemicals from propylene – Isopropanol processes (sulphuric acid & dehydration process) – Production of propylene oxide – Acetone – Acrylonitrile – Acrylic acid – cumene – Production of Bisphenol A – Dehydrogenation of Butane & Butene – Production of Butanol – Maleic anhydride – Acetic acid from Butane – Butadiene from Butane alkylation (Sulphuric acid alkylation – HF alkylation).

2. Explain the status of Petrochemical industries in our country.

3. Write short note on a) Feed stocks/ Raw materials for petrochemicals

4. Describe the production & uses of methanol by synthesis gas route.

5. describe the production of formaldehyde from methanol.

6. Explain the manufacture of following with flow diagram.

    a) Chloromethanes

    b) Methyl amine

7. Describe the production of ethylene.

8. With flow diagram explain the mabnufacture of following.

     a) Vinyl chloride by oxichlorination of ethylene, acetylene - HCl reaction, by ethylene

         oxygen acetic acid reaction.

     b) Ethylene oxide & glycol by oxidation of ethylene, ethanol from ethylene

     c) Vinyl acetate by Wacker process

     d) Acetaldehyde from acetylene

     e) Isoprene from Propylene dimer
